A 2-3 day family friendly festival to ring in the New Year comes alive with culture and resonates with the sound of Christmas folk, soca and parang. With live entertainment, games and rides for kids, midnight fireworks, Assou Square has a place in history, which accounts for the significance the unique celebration holds for the average resident.
Historically every January, tens of thousands of people would crowd the streets of Castries to participate in the annual On-The-Square Festival (now Derek Walcott Square). The venue has shifted to the John Compton Highway which becomes transformed into an open round-the-clock bazaar and festival filled with fascinating sights, sounds and smells as artists, performers, exhibitors, food merchants and families from all cultures commingle.
